Zeus & Apollo – Magnum PI

za-bowlThe 80’s action / drama series Magnum PI featured two Doberman pinschers named Apollo and Zeus as (spoiled) guard dogs for the novelist Robin Masters’ home (a.k.a. Robin’s Nest) and were trained by the character Jonathan Quayle Higgins III (played by John Hillerman).  In the beginning the dogs often chased the star of the show, Thomas Magnum (played by Tom Selleck) but as the series progressed they became pals.

In the beginning of season 1 they were played by three Dobermans, two females named Cola and Hohea and a male named Joe, trained by Karl Lewis Miller.  During the first season Kael left and was replaced by Scott Hart who eventually brought in his own dogs, two males named Whiskey and Brutus and a female named Dominique.  Later in the series the producers tried to find less expensive dogs to use but Tom Selleck convinced them to stay with the current 3 dogs.  There was even a plan  to write the dogs out of the show and again, Tom Selleck and John Hillerman convinced them to keep the dogs in the show.

SQUIRREL! Continue reading
